The film is brilliantly executed and it brilliantly spoofs the science-fiction-spaceship genre. This is one of the funniest smart comedies I have seen. 'Galaxy Quest' fits into this category as I made the mistake of watching it while having dinner and I almost choked several times. And that humor will help contribute to your sanity in this world we share. There are some movies that are better watched while you are not eating. You might have to dig deep or look at a different angle, and even embrace some immaturity - which has never been hard for me - but I bet it’s there somewhere. Often we hear the old adage, “find the silver lining in a situation.” I challenge you to find humor in whatever difficult circumstance that you might be facing. While some things are serious and need to be handled expeditiously, sometimes it is important just to take a deep breath and realize that when it rains inside there’s nothing you can do about it. As a teacher, my hope is that my approach and reaction to events that are out of my hands are observed by my students and influence how they approach and feel about situations in their own lives. The way I look at it, I was able to get a deep clean of the office carpet – mother nature style. However, a better approach is to just roll with the punches. Again, it is easy to look at events like this that are out of my hands and get frustrated, stressed, and let them dictate my mood and countenance. This resulted in me relocating to a temporary teaching location until things dry out. Hurricane Ida came through this past weekend and while my house survived without any damage there was water damage in my university studio. I am in week two of the fall 2021 semester and it has already proved very eventful. Or maybe it wasn’t and he was just humoring me. It is a subtle way for us all to remind ourselves to tune with our ears, not by those imaginary frets we pretend are on our trombone slide! This joke was particularly poignant with one of my students who is an incredibly talented guitarist. Oh… you didn’t upgrade to the fretted slide did ya? The student will reply with the make and model of their instrument and then I follow up with… When a student plays out of tune, I always address it, but I have found that humor makes it memorable. The name of my website is the embodiment of my approach to humor in pedagogy. Guinan: Because you're a *'droid* and I'm a *'noid*. Data: Have I said something to offend you? Why? Because you're a 'droid and I'm a 'noid. We're talking, we're having an intimate conversation. From Season 2, Episode 4, The Outrageous Okana: One example of this is his pursuit of the elusive human trait - humor. Throughout the Star Trek series, one of my favorite characters, Data, is endeavoring to be more human. Even in my faith, I stand by the belief that my God has a sense of humor. Of course, I do appreciate sophisticated humor as well, but, alas, I am but a simple man! One of my favorite things that I love about my wife is that she laughs at all my jokes – whether they’re funny or not. My go-to humor, as many people who know me can attest, are puns, sarcasm, and dad jokes. Whoever said laughter is the best medicine was a wise sage and I completely agree! Humor even finds a place in my pedagogy, relationship with students and colleagues, and overall approach to life. Without humor, I would imagine it would be difficult to hold onto my sanity in this crazy world and handle the circumstances that seem to flow day in and day out. Likewise, humor plays a large part in my life not only personally, but also professionally. One of the things I most despise in life is pretension. ![]() ![]() Just to see him perform… you know the innocence and the energy…just the child-like humor and total lack of pretension. The late trombonist and also one of my dear friends, James Lebens, describes seeing Stuart Dempster:
